Epidural steroid injections (ESI) are one of the most common treatments for acute to chronic pain. It is a type of anti-inflammatory medication that is a great alternative to more advanced treatments or surgery. Ideal candidates are individuals who are suffering from chronic dull pain or extreme discomfort due to a physical injury, slipped disc, or other health concerns, like arthritis. Our seasoned team of interventional pain management physicians are highly trained and experienced in administering epidurals to accurately treat precise areas of discomfort. There are several different types of steroids, but generally, all of them consist of an anti-inflammatory medication and a numbing agent, like lidocaine or bupivacaine. During your initial consultation, we will review your condition and determine which type of steroid may provide the most pain relief. From there, we usually administer the ESI at the same time as your consultation with the help of a live x-ray machine called a fluoroscope. This provides our team with a live view of your body structures so we can place the steroid accurately. The procedure generally takes about 10 – 15 minutes to complete, and once it's done, you will be free to resume your daily activities. Most patients experience a noticeable improvement in their symptoms almost immediately.
If you or your loved one is suffering from constant joint, nerve, or muscle pain, contact Tricity Pain Associates in New Braunfels or Seguin, TX to learn more about epidural steroid injections. They may be the right solution for you, especially if you aren't ready to undergo major surgery.
